5 Top Tips to Avoid Valentine’s Day Chocolates

It hardly seems a week has passed after the celebration of the New Year before Valentine’s Day chocolates start to hit the shelf. And for those trying hard to stick to their weight loss program, these can be difficult days. They seem to be dotted up every aisle, in every store and unfortunately, don’t plan on going away anytime soon. There are however some things that you can do to avoid these chocolates. Here are our top tips to survive Valentine’s Day.

1. Be prepared

You know that chocolates are going to be everywhere and there is not a thing you can do about it. Be mentally prepared for the challenge and maintain a clear focus on your weight loss goals. Spend more time in the vegetable aisle than the chocolate aisle and count each day leading up to Valentine’s Day as a huge win for you.

2. Share the goodies

If by some chance chocolate goodies enter your home or the workplace, then share them around. Immediately!. Always be gracious in accepting the gift but remember, there is no hard and fast rule that says you have to eat it yourself. The more other people eat, the less you will be tempted by the box of chocolates sitting on your desk.

3. Keep a chocolate free home

Don’t kid yourself. If any Valentine’s Day chocolates enter the house, then you will be tempted to eat them. Maybe not immediately, but it will happen. The best rule to have at this time of year is to say no to chocolate. Period. If it is not there, then you cannot eat it. There are plenty of other low fat snack options you can have when you are feeling the need to nibble.

4. Cook your favorite low cal meals

Perhaps you have a favorite dish or two that you save for a special occasion. Well, now is the time to bring them out. Any special low cal, low fat meals that make you feel like you are treating yourself will ease any feelings of deprivation that you might be experiencing. Just because you are saying no to chocolate, doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy other delicious delights.

5. Prepare healthy Valentine’s Day treats

If you are involved in arranging Valentine’s Day treats, then aim for ones that don’t involve masses of chocolate. Popcorn snacks, fruit lollipops - really anything you can think of that can be cut or formed into a heart shape. Be creative; cherry tomatoes, eggs, low fat cookies, watermelon – all great alternatives that mean no chocolate needs to enter your kitchen.

One important piece of advice is to remember that you are only human. If you do end up craving some chocolate then make sure it is the best kind for you.
