You don’t have to look too hard to see all the delicious holiday food and drink on offer at this time of year. With eggnog, pumpkin pie and Christmas cookies in every store tempting you to purchase and eat, it can be difficult to stay focused on your weight loss program. These sweet treats, and many others like them, can often mean that all thoughts of your diet simply fly out the window.

You CAN enjoy festive holiday parties and events without compromising your ability to lose weight with a few little tips.

  • Instead of drinking calorie-laden beverages, switch it up for mineral water with a touch of lime or lemon juice. Avoid alcohol and opt for low-calorie drinks wherever possible.
  • If food is a part of the event, enjoy a low-calorie bowl of soup before the dinner party to avoid overindulging once you arrive.
  • Try not to skip meals as that can increase the risk of overeating. Keep a snack bag of vegetables in your handbag or backpack for emergency situations.
  • Serve up a healthy salad rather than the traditional carb fueled sides which usually accompany holiday celebrations. Healthy green and red salads with lettuce, avocado, tomato and red pepper can look incredibly festive.
  • Grill lean meat kebabs for easy portion-controlled meal options. Limiting portions means you aren't tempted to go back for a second helping.
  • Freeze leftovers to avoid eating just to clear out the refrigerator. They will keep, and you can get to enjoy them all over again.
  • Follow your exercise plan as much as possible over the holiday season. Don't overdo it, however, as this time of year can be busy enough with all the dinner parties and family events going on.
  • Limit sauces and dressings and aim for a healthy dose of colorful and delicious non-starch vegetables. The more variety of colors, the better.

A positive mind and a clear plan will help avoid holiday weight gain and ensure you stick to those healthy habits.
