Can Meditation Improve Your Health?

You may not think that meditation has a place in your weight loss and fitness program, but you might just be surprised to learn that it has a lot of benefits for both your health and well-being. Even just a simple fifteen-minute meditation can help you better control your stress and reduce your anxiety. It can also improve your cardiovascular health and decrease your blood pressure.

Meditation done on a regular basis will enable you to be able to achieve a deeper state of relaxation – especially useful after a busy day at work. Even the simple act of taking a deep breath and relaxing when you are stressed can produce instant results. Meditation can magnify that and melt the tension from your body almost instantly.

But even better, the more you meditate, the more you will start to see the cumulative benefits on your body.

Meditation can come in many forms. As long as you can set the scene to achieve deep relaxation, then your body and mind will benefit. You can try specific yoga poses, tai chi, repetitive mantras or traditional meditation poses to achieve a deep state of relaxation.

Focus on each part of the body and work your way down. Close your eyes. Relax your head, neck, arms, shoulders, stomach and feet. Once you have achieved a relaxing pose, concentrate on your breathing. Inhale. Exhale. And relax some more. If you notice your mind starting to wander, then refocus your concentration back on your breathing. You can mentally repeat a simple word or sound such as “om” to improve your concentration. Or you can picture a waterfall or light washing over you to eliminate all the tension and stress. Mental imagery can be particularly helpful if you struggle to relax.

The great thing about meditation is the fact that it can be done by anyone, at any time of day. Just a few minutes each day can help you restore your inner peace and remove all sense of unease or other negative feelings.
