'Brain scans of people after a sleepless night show that sleeplessness reduces the so-called higher order powers of our brain and creates an excessive response in more primitive parts of the brain. Researchers say this combination of brain activities may lead to poor food choices, such as eating junk food.'

We all understand the importance of sleep for maintaining overall good health and well-being. As you continue on your path to weight loss, you need to definitely make sure you are getting plenty of sleep.
As mentioned above, sleeplessness may impair our judgment when it comes to making the right food choices. As poor sleep habits continue, you may find yourself struggling to lose weight due to other physiological reasons. Studies show that continued lack of sleep increases the production of a hormone known as cortisol, which stimulates glucose production and triggers a hunger response in the brain. Lack of sleep also lowers the levels of a hormone which controls appetite known as leptin. Lower leptin levels translates to increased appetites. To top it off, a sleep-deprived body becomes less efficient in metabolizing carbohydrates. These all contribute to challenges with weight loss, but when sleep deprivation occurs over long periods of time, you may face elevated risks of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and memory loss.
