Sipping on a glass of fresh fruit or vegetable juice is indeed refreshing. It is possible, however, to have too much of a good thing. Fresh juice can be very high in sugar, even as much as a can of soda or other sweetened beverages in some cases. It is not a low calorie alternative by any stretch of the imagination, and some vegetables like carrots and beets are best to be avoided altogether. Drinking juice on a daily basis can play havoc with your weight loss plans.

But more than that, if you prefer to consume juice over eating fresh fruit then you lose much of the insoluble fiber content of the fruit, or the pulp as it is also known. The fiber carries an abundance of benefits for the digestive system and slows down the absorption of the fruit’s sugar.

Recent studies show that drinking too much juice can increase issues like type 2 diabetes while eating fruit whole can lower the risk. Blueberries, grapes and apples have been shown to be particularly beneficial in minimizing the risk. Without the fiber to absorb the sugar and keep the glycemic index (the measure of how fast carbohydrates boost your blood sugar) low, the risk of diabetes increases. Therefore it is important to aim for a healthy balance when it comes to juicing.

While the occasional glass of juice can be beneficial – think of all that concentrated nutrition – limit it for good measure. Liquid calories are not as filling as eating fruits and vegetables either. So do yourself a favor; next time you are craving an orange, eat it rather than drink it and enjoy it for the occasional treat it is. It provides well over the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C without the unnecessary spike in blood sugar.

The fiber in the fruit and vegetables you choose to consume whole will ensure you are more satisfied and keep the nutrients intact.
