People make the decision to lose weight for a variety of reasons. For some, they wish to look better for an upcoming event, such as a wedding or high school reunion. Building a better body image starts in our minds. Many of us have unfortunately gotten so caught up with how the media and society define the “ideal body.” Of course, most of us want to look our best, but some people go to extremes and radical quick fixes so they can obtain that ideal look.

As Gina Demillo Wagner points out in her article for Experience Life, “Build a Better Body Image,” the number of people going under the knife for painful bariatric surgeries and other cosmetic surgery procedures increases each year.

Wagner goes on to say,

“But the effects of such surgeries don’t always resolve body-image issues, and in some cases they can make matters worse, setting individuals on a never-ending quest for perfection and self-confidence that no amount of nip-and-tuck can satisfy.”

The same is true for extreme dieting. Fad diets may indeed work for short term weight loss. However, there are not only health risks involved with these diets, but they also usually result in “yo-yo” dieting, which is a vicious, unhealthy cycle of losing weight, regaining it, losing it again, and so on.
