Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed an updated version of the "nutrition facts" labels on all food products. Current concerns about Americans' eating habits and health concerns have prompted the FDA to take action. Obesity, and its related health and medical issues, have become widespread. The FDA's proposal promises benefits for millions of Americans who want to learn how to make better food choices, how to lose weight, and how to improve their overall health.
Current food labeling helps people who follow diet plans for weight loss. For example, it helps when you understand and pay attention to specific nutrition facts on food labels, such as the amount of calories and the serving sizes. These two things are certainly useful for helping you make good decisions about which foods you choose to eat, as well as how much.

One very important part of the food label for people focused on weight loss is the carbohydrates per serving section. When tracking carbs, you need to pay attention to the "Total Carbohydrate" count - which includes the grams of “fiber,” grams of “sugars” and grams of “other carbohydrate - rather than the net carbs with fiber removed.
The FDA's goals for new labeling include the following:
- Revised serving sizes (they have been the same since 1994)
- Making calorie counts easier to find and understand
- Drawing attention to "added sugars"
As people begin to know and understand how the foods they eat affect their diets, they will hopefully begin making better dietary choices. The FDA's plan to revise food labeling is a step in the right direction with benefits for all of us - whether we need to lose weight, maintain a healthy lifestyle, or both.
