Have you had the chance to take a few dips in the pool or another body of water during the hottest part of the summer this year? Summer may be nearly over, but you can always enjoy swimming any time of the year. If you’re thinking about swimming to lose weight, it’s important to remember that swimming – or any other exercise - should be combined with healthy diet plans and other exercises for optimal results. Swimming, however, is proven to be one of the best exercises you can do since it offers you a great cardiovascular workout without straining your joints.
If you’re already following a healthy low-carb diet plan and you’re able to commit yourself to a regular swimming routine, then you may see weight loss results from swimming. It’s good to know that it may take a little while for you to achieve noticeable results. You’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to work towards the ideal workout time and the proper form that is necessary for weight loss from swimming, so patience is key.

With that in mind, you’ll want to work towards spending 60 minutes for 4-6 days a week in the pool. The recommended way to swim for exercise is by focusing on interval training. The author of an article on the FITDAY site titled “Melt Away the Fat: How to Lose 10 Pounds by Swimming,” explains how to get started:
"If you are new to swimming, start slowly. During the first week, begin by doing intervals. Swim for 30 seconds and then rest for 30 seconds. As this gets easier, begin to increase your swim time and reduce your rest interval. Repeat for 30 minutes. Aim to advance to 60 minutes and to the point where you can swim up to 20 laps, or 500 meters, without stopping."
Another important thing to keep in mind: swimming, especially in colder water, tends to stimulate your appetite. Knowing this should help you refrain from eating more calories than you just burned off during your swim, and sabotaging your weight loss efforts. Otherwise, all you need to do is eat sensibly, have fun in the pool - and feel good in knowing that you're getting a great cardiovascular workout!
