While some diets focus on net carbs, at FIT Medical Weight Loss we count total carbs in our diet plans. We believe that minimizing the amount of total carbohydrates will help you reach your goal weight quicker. Our focus is on healthy eating with plenty of healthy low fat, high protein and low carbohydrate food options on offer. Once you reach your goal weight, you can continue with our low-carb healthy eating plan to maintain your weight loss goals.

What are total carbs?

Total carbs specifies the total number of carbs in a particular food or food product. Total carbohydrates cover food items such as bread, rice, potatoes, fruits and vegetables.

What are net carbs?

Net carbs is essentially total carbs without the fiber, sugar alcohol and glycerin, and it is the inclusion of net carbs in many diets which is particularly confusing. Net carbs is a relatively new food trend concept and is based on the assumption that not all carbohydrates have the same effect on our body. Foods which are relatively low in net carbs such as fruit and vegetables don’t seem to have as much impact on our blood sugar. Therefore, many dietitians leave their count out altogether.

Why does FIT Medical Weight Loss count total carbs?

From our experience, diets which count only net carbs are not as effective for long-term weight loss. The confusion about net carbs lies in the fact that there are two types of fiber - soluble and insoluble. Many dietitians believe that dietary fiber does not affect our body or produce noticeable weight gain. While this might be the case for insoluble fiber, it does not apply to soluble fiber. Failing to count net carbs is failing to count soluble fiber.

While diets which focus on net carbs may mean you can eat a little more, they also mean you won’t lose weight as quickly. This misrepresentation can hamper your weight loss goals over time. Stick to effective dietary measures such as counting total carbs rather than fad diets, and you won’t go wrong.
