It is natural to sweat over the weekend looming in the distance. During Monday to Friday you have a set routine, you know where you will be at what time and you understand exactly what you will be eating or drinking within reason. The weekend, however, is completely different. There is less routine, more opportunities to fall off the wagon and a high chance that you will have to face situations that you may not be prepared for.

Unless you want to lock yourself in the house Saturday and Sunday, then you may want to follow these tips to tackle the weekend with confidence.

Shop before the weekend arrives

Shop midweek to avoid those last minute purchases. This will help you stick to your plan and keep those impulse purchases out of your home. It is important you prepare mentally for the upcoming weekend and if you know you have guests, offer healthy but satisfying options.

Plan around the events

If you know you have a party on Saturday evening, then avoid a big hearty breakfast or celebratory lunch beforehand. Instead, fill up on healthy foods that will balance out the evening menu. Don’t forget to drink lots of water to fill you up.

Add a touch of realism

If you inadvertently eat more than you meant to, know it is not the end of the world. Just don’t make a habit of it. Eating more than a regular amount during a special event is all part and parcel of life. Just make sure that when it comes to the next meal, you curb those urges and stick to your goals.

Do some exercise

An early morning or evening walk will do wonders for your body and soul on the weekend. Just adding a bit of exercise into your routine can help you feel motivated and confident. Balance it out with plenty of relaxation and find time to enjoy it with those you love.

Pick one thing rather than everything

If you are stuck making a choice between a delicious drink or dessert, then opt for one thing rather than all. It is okay to indulge now and then but going from nothing to all with a few poor choices can upset the balance. Give in to your craving if you must and enjoy.

Don’t eat on the run

Don’t just grab something and head out the door. Plan your meals so you can sit down and enjoy them. That way you will be less likely to give into temptation and will eat until full. Always dine at the table with a healthy glass of water or alternative light beverage as an accompaniment.

Source out the healthy food

If you are at an event where you are surrounded by food, survey the table and opt for the healthiest choices possible. Stick close to those food items to keep your focus. Wander too far away from the vegetable and meat platters, and you might find yourself staring at something that is a complete no-no.

Stay away from alcohol

Weekend events are generally laden with alcohol. Opt for club soda or sparkling water, and no one will be any the wiser. If you do find yourself drinking, then definitely limit it to one or two. Alcoholic beverages will make you more likely to lose your inhibitions and reach for non-healthy food options.

Stick to your weekday routine as close as possible but allow for those surprise events and meetups as much as you can. Avoid skipping meals to overcompensate as that will leave you feeling hungry and more likely to reach for something that is unhealthy.
