Willpower – some days you may have it in abundance, other days you may find it is a scarce commodity indeed. When your aim is to lose weight, be healthy and commit to a regular exercise program, willpower is something you may wish to have around as much as possible. So how can you improve your willpower, or at the very least, have it available when you need it the most?

Try to stay positive

Your moods can affect your willpower. If you are feeling positive and in control, then your willpower may be strong. Turning down a second helping may be easy, even followed by a smile. Catch you on a bad day, and it may be a different story altogether. Emotional eating is a real issue for many, and on those days, willpower may be scarce. When you find you are emotionally drained or upset, do something that will pull you out of your funk. Go for a walk, chat with a friend, watch your favorite movie – anything to ensure your emotions don’t pull you into a series of bad decision making.

Start small

The funny thing about willpower is that the more you practice saying no, the better your ability to stay strong will be. So start small. Make the decision to do something that is in your best interests and see where it takes you. Then do it tomorrow and the day after. The more you practice, the less inclined you will be to veer from your healthy choices. Eat regularly to keep your blood sugar levels in check, so you don’t feel the need to pick up that sugary treat on the way home.

Out of sight, out of mind

Clear the unhealthy food from the cupboards and stay away from drool-worthy social media pages. If you do find your willpower waning, then shut down your Pinterest food images fast. Do a spot of yoga or meditation and try to take your mind off food or whatever it is you are struggling with. While you may feel you are strong the majority of days, there is no need to test it on those days when you struggle to keep everything together. Make sure there is enough healthy food in the fridge, so you aren’t convinced to do a last minute snack run and destroy all of your hard work to date.

Improve your sleep patterns

A healthy pattern of sleep is at the heart of everything you do. It will help with your willpower levels and your ability to lose weight, work, concentrate and exercise. You may think it’s only an hour or two of your time, but a late night here and there can really throw your patterns out. If you struggle to get seven hours of sleep, then some serious changes in your lifestyle may need to be made. When you are well-rested and feeling great about life, your decisions will be more rational and grounded, and less tied to your emotions and quick fix strategies. When in doubt, go to bed early and see how you feel.
