It is so easy to feel down when it comes to the cold weather. We can all be affected by the cold weather at some time or another, and a lack of cheery sunshine doesn’t help one little bit. Winter blues, winter doldrums, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or whatever you want to call it is a real problem in the cooler months. Here are five ways you can stay happy and motivated through winter.

Exercise

Keeping fit and active in the winter months is just as important in summer as it is winter. Try to find ways in which you can keep moving, even if it means walking around your local mall. You may need to switch up your routine to take in more indoor exercise such as pilates or yoga, but whatever you choose, make sure you do it on a regular basis.

Eat healthily

Even though you may not necessarily feel like sticking to your diet, it is important that you eat healthy to give you energy and maintain your smile. The last thing you want to do is put on weight over winter, and this can put a real dampener on your spirits and make you feel even worse. Keep your plates as colourful as possible and make sure you are eating a wide range of vegetables and proteins to fuel you and fill you.

Socialise

It is easy just to stay indoors huddled by the fire. But the reality is that social company can make us feel better in an instant. Make an effort to connect with others in the winter months and arrange get-togethers, despite the weather. Accept as many invitations as possible to local events, and if there are none, then create your own.

Create a To-Do List

Having a list of things to do and crossing them off one by one is great for the soul. It gives you a sense of accomplishment, no matter how small. So create a list of things that you can do in the winter month. Finish that book, watch that movie, write a blog post, do a crossword puzzle – give yourself a moment to enjoy your accomplishment. Then reset and repeat. Your brain’s dopamine levels will thank you.

Get Outside

We all need a burst of natural light every day if possible – even in the colder months you can enjoy the feeling of the sunshine trying to burst through those clouds. Try to get outside during your lunch break when the sun is high in the sky, even if it means a quick walk around the block with a cup of coffee in hand. Make sure you dress suitably warm as being cold is no fun for anyone.

Following these five things will have you sleeping better and feeling more motivated to tackle whatever comes your way.
