Enhancing the dishes which come out of your kitchen with herbs and spices is a great way to tempt those taste buds without resorting to high calories sauces and sides. As you know, it is easy to get stuck in a rut with your cooking. Try to find at least one new recipe a month to cycle into your repertoire. As you do this, you will learn new recipes and new ways to improve on your old favorites. Many herbs and spices also have excellent medicinal properties as well.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a great spice that is popular during winter time. It is commonly featured in baking and can be mixed with coffee, hot chocolate, baked fruit, pies and more. Cinnamon does not only taste exquisite, but it can assist in lowering blood sugar levels and cholesterol. It can also be used on roasted squash, added in pancakes and crepes, or thrown in curries and stews.

Turmeric

You may be familiar with turmeric as it is often found as an ingredient in curries, but it can be utilized in so many other dishes. Consider putting it in your scrambled eggs, popping it on your roasted vegetables, or using it in your soup. You can even put a pinch in your smoothies and juices. Turmeric is an excellent anti-inflammatory and is thought to be useful to help brain function, and reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Basil

While pesto immediately springs to mind, basil can really liven up your cuisine. It is well suited to tomato-based dishes and is delicious in salads, sauces, soups and stir-frys. Ginger

Commonly found in Asian dishes such as Chinese and Thai, ginger also has strong anti-inflammatory properties and can help with nausea. Just toss it in your sauces or add it to your chicken dishes. It is tasty in tea, delicious with pork, beef and shrimp and so good in soups such as squash and pumpkin, and carrot. Ginger broccoli is recommended too!

Rosemary

Rosemary is an enticing aromatic herb that goes great with lamb and pork. It is also a favorite addition to tomato sauces and stews. But, did you know it is also helpful for allergies and nasal congestion? If you want to increase the levels of rosemary in your diet, then we suggest throwing it into your roast vegetables such as cauliflower and carrots. Garlic

It is not only attributed to warding off vampires, but it is useful for heart health and assisting with colds. It is also known to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. Garlic is extremely versatile in cooking and goes well with kale, chicken, cauliflower, beef, shrimp, cabbage and bok choy. And that’s just for starters. Healthy and flavorsome, a clove or two a day will boost your health and immune system.

Cumin

Cumin is rich in iron and can assist with general weight loss when eaten alongside a low fat, low-calorie diet. Commonly found a lot in Indian food, there are many ways you can use cumin in your dishes. It is great with shrimp and lime, yummy roasted with carrots, perfect in chili, and scrumptious when cooked with tomatoes and eggplant. Soups, stews or salads - cumin can be incorporated in so many fun and inviting ways.
