Just because something has always been made that way, doesn’t mean there's no room for improvement. There are plenty of classic recipes that could do with a bit of modernization, particularly when it comes to healthy eating and weight loss. Many of the classics are laden with carbs, cheese and butter and could be enhanced with fresh ingredients such as colorful vegetables and additional herbs and spices.
Shepherd’s Pie
Shepherd’s pie is a hearty dish that works well any time of year. But rather than topping it with potatoes, get creative and opt for a cauliflower or parsnip mix. You can also add mushrooms and peas and herb it up with thyme, rosemary or sage. You can also leave out the cheese. With the addition of all those tasty vegetables and herbs, no one will even notice.

Spaghetti and Meatballs
Who doesn’t love this Italian classic! Instead of sitting down to a plate of spaghetti, consider swapping it out for zucchini noodles, known as zoodles. You even have the option of substituting turkey for the beef. Where possible, make the sauce from scratch so you can enhance it with herbs, spices and vegetables limiting sodium and preservatives which are often found in cans and jars.
The Classic Burger
Nowhere is it written that you need to always serve the burger on a bun. You can opt for turkey meat or any other ground meat alternative and add garlic, oregano, parsley and rosemary. Barbecue it up and enjoy this classic summer fare. Dish it up with an attractive salad and a homemade dressing of your choice.
Sloppy Joes
Who doesn’t enjoy eating Sloppy Joes? However, to make it more suitable for the dining room table, you might want to make a few changes. Firstly, ditch the bun. Swap the mince meat out with turkey and serve it alongside as many vegetables as possible. The more the merrier! A selection of onions, peppers, spinach and mushrooms will make it into a meal fit for any man or woman.
Lasagna
Lasagna is a great dish for the whole family, but instead of lasagna noodles, you can layer the meat with strips of zucchini or eggplant. Also, don’t forget to fill out the sauce with a variety of vegetables, herbs and spices. You could even go entirely vegetarian and skip the meat altogether. Mushrooms, spinach, pumpkin and peppers make a great addition to lasagna. Experimenting is half the fun.
