You probably know by now that your soda is loaded with sugar. Classic soda is a favorite, not only for the caffeine but also for the sugar it contains. Thankfully for your weight loss goal, there are many better ways to satisfy the need for caffeine or some satisfying bubbles while staying away from drinks with a high sugar content that will derail your diet.

While you can’t, and probably don’t want to, cut all sugar from your diet, removing sugary drinks is an easy change to make that will significantly cut your daily sugar intake. Try black coffee with cinnamon for your caffeine fix and flavored seltzer waters for those refreshing bubbles.

Traditional sodas aren’t the only offenders. Fruit drinks, sweetened teas, and flavored waters often carry large amounts of sugar. It is a great science fair project for kids to line up their favorite drinks and calculate from the labels the number of sugar cubes in each bottle. Many drink containers have several servings in the bottle, requiring you to multiply the number of servings by the grams of sugar. This practice also makes it seem at first glance like the drink is healthier than it is.

Sugar in fruit juice may seem healthier since it comes from fruit, but consuming the juice without the fruit means you deny yourself the natural fibers and other nutrients that come from the pulp. If you do enjoy a piece of fruit on occasion, try blending it with ice to make a refreshing drink that is sweet but still retains all the health benefits of the fruit.

Where available, it is recommended that you choose beverages that are flavored with artificial sweeteners over full sugar varieties. Note that drinking sweet drinks, even when artificially flavored, can trigger a desire in some individuals to crave sugar. If you can have artificial sweeteners without the urge to consume more sugar, then it is the better choice for you. Sugar is addictive, and its consumption in large amounts leads to obesity and many other health issues.

If your goal is to lose weight, cutting out the sugar drinks is an easy way to make a positive step towards that goal. You may be surprised by how much sugar you consume every day without thinking. Instead of drinking your sugar and the resulting calories, opt for water or another healthier drink and save those calories for a meal you'll enjoy.
