If you work in an office environment then you will understand the problems it can pose to a weight loss program. There is always that one person who loves to bake while other colleagues are constantly bringing in donuts and cakes. Then there are the Christmas parties and office meetings where the tables are jam packed with unnecessary high calorie and high fat content food items.

To get through the day without resorting to mid-morning or mid-afternoon unhealthy food choices, we recommend these tips. They will help you kick that mindless eating to the curb once and for all!

Leave the office

On a day where there is food in the lunchroom or the boardroom, stay away as much as your job physically allows. Eat your healthy lunch outdoors rather than sitting in the lunchroom with the leftovers calling your name. Avoid the vending machine and the office candy jar too. Out of sight – out of mind!

Have a hot drink

If you feel like snacking, make yourself a cup of hot coffee or tea instead. Keep your mouth and hands busy by drinking rather than eating. A low-calorie drink is far better for your waistline and makes a great mid-morning or mid-afternoon pick-me-up.

Go for a walk

No one says you have to stay in the office over your lunch break. If you don’t want to be surrounded by the calorie-laden pastries at every turn, then go for a walk. Doing exercise over your lunch break will motivate you to stick to your diet even more.

Bring your own snacks

If you know you are going to be surrounded by unhealthy food options, then just bring your own. Chop up some healthy vegetable sticks with a low-fat dip option and treat yourself. Try to find the balance between a busy day at the office and unhealthy workplace choices.

Choose wisely

There is a huge difference between eating sugar and opting for something sugar-free. The same goes for something homemade where you control all the ingredients over something that is store-bought. Weigh up your decisions before you eat.

Don’t skip meals

You are more likely to be eyeing off the baked goods tray if you skipped breakfast or didn’t have time for lunch. Eat regularly and healthily to avoid mid-morning and afternoon slumps where you feel you need a sugar fix as a treat.

Partner up with an office buddy

Is there someone else trying to lose weight in the office? Find a 'diet buddy' and make each other accountable for what you eat during the workday. Make a pact to avoid office treats altogether. It is so much easier to say no when you have physical support when you need it the most.

Saying no is hard

If you do find you make a bad decision, it is not the end of the world. Concentrate on being positive as much as you can. We all need a treat from time to time, but your overall focus should be on your wellbeing, fitness and health for the long-term.
