In the lead-up to Halloween, it is hard NOT to notice the abundance of candy and chocolate in every aisle. And it can be a real struggle for people who are watching their weight or trying to avoid sugary foods altogether. It is all well and good getting into the spirit of the festivities and helping the kids out with their costumes, but it can lead to problems if you get the munchies. Out of sight out of mind is always best but Halloween does make it extremely tempting.

Here are our diet tips on how to survive the goodies in the lead-up, during and after Halloween.

  • If you do intend to hand out candy, buy it at the last minute so you can avoid the temptation for as long as possible.
  • Avoid candy altogether and give out healthy treats.
  • Don’t keep candy in the house any longer than necessary.
  • Buy candy you don’t like so you are less tempted.
  • If you have young children, consider letting the Switch Witch pay a visit. She swaps all the candy for a more desirable, less sugary gift. And you can ditch that candy that very same evening.
  • Eat a big meal before trick-or-treating, so you aren’t tempted to snack.
  • If you do succumb to tasting the treats, don’t throw your diet in altogether. Chalk it up to experience and start again tomorrow.

If you are looking for some FIT friendly treats to enjoy with your family on Halloween night, try these on for size.

4.       Drain the seeds and pat them dry.

5.       Put the seeds in a bowl and add the olive oil, chili powder and salt and stir thoroughly.

Rosemary and Garlic Eggplant Chips

Eggplants are a good source of potassium and magnesium

Ingredients

  • 2 average eggplants
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tablespoon fresh or dried rosemary
  • Salt to taste

Directions

1.       Slice the eggplants into about ¼ inch pieces with a knife.

2.       Lay in a single layer on a baking sheet with baking foil or parchment paper and sprinkle with salt.

3.       Let it sit for up to an hour to leach out water. Use a paper towel to tap on each side to remove any excess water.

4.       Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, chopped rosemary and mashed garlic.

5.       Brush each slice on both sides with the mixture. Add more salt if needed.

6.       Place in the oven for 20-30 minutes.

7.       Remove from the oven and enjoy.
