When you start a new diet, it can be difficult to know where to begin. There is so much misinformation out there that claims that such and such is healthy, when in reality the opposite is true. It can be difficult to understand where to start, let alone decipher between what you should eat and what you shouldn't! If you are bamboozled by dieting terms and are struggling with what changes you need to make, then it is time to get back to basics. Follow these dieting tips for beginners, and you cannot go wrong.
Keep track
One of the best things you can do, regardless of whether you are a beginner or have been dieting for a while, is to keep track of everything you eat. While you may not want to note the unhealthy food choices you have made this week, it is important that you take responsibility for all of your decisions – good and bad. Then at the end of each day, consider what you could improve.

Cut out the sugar
Sugar can be one of your biggest enemies, and like salt, it can sneak into everything. Check everything you purchase for any hidden sugars, and if you believe you are eating too much fruit, then you might want to consider cutting back. Even fruit has natural sugars which can reduce your ability to lose weight if consumed in excess. Moderation and balance are essential when it comes to healthy eating.
Reduce the carbs
If you are consuming a significant amount of carbohydrates, then you might want to consider reducing your portions. If weight loss is your goal, then you will need to limit your carbohydrates or increase your exercise to compensate for the amount you eat.
Minimize the fat
Just as some fat is necessary to keep your body functioning, others are not. While the idea of good-fat food may be disconcerting at first, there is such a thing. And you can bet that it doesn’t include a large portion of deep-fried fries on the side. Limit your saturated fat intake and aim for polyunsaturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fats for optimal health.
Increase the vegetables
If you can spot at least 3 or 4 colors on your plate, then you know you’re eating well. Aim for a rainbow of vegetables – the more colors, the merrier. It beats staring at a dish which is brown or white. Vegetables will give you all kinds of necessary vitamins and minerals, making sure that whatever meal you serve up is pleasing to the eye as well as the body.
Eat regularly
Healthy eating is not about fasting or skipping meals. The best way to lose weight consistently is to eat well and eat often. Skipping meals to save on calories will affect your overall ability to lose weight and you may find that you are fluctuating, rather than obtaining a regular weight loss pattern. Three meals a day with healthy snacks in between should serve you well in the long-term.
