Many people on diet plans worry about sticking to them during holidays such as Thanksgiving. You may even be worried about trying to lose weight around Thanksgiving. Doing so may sound dreadful to you - maybe even impossible - but this really doesn't have to be the case. Instead, think about taking this time to reflect upon the things for which you have to be thankful and let yourself appreciate the season. It's also good to know that you have many good options for celebrating this holiday without sabotaging your weight loss.

These are some useful tips to help keep your spirits bright while staying on track with your weight loss goals.

  • Drink plenty of water and indulge in a low carb, protein-packed snack before the meal. This will help you resist the temptation of overeating at the table.
  • Make or buy a vegetable tray for everyone to enjoy. This way you also have something to snack on without any guilt.
  • If you are involved in the cooking, choose recipes in which you can add fresh herbs and spices which are in line with your diet plans. Using these natural ingredients allows you to enhance the flavor of the foods while making healthy choices for you and your guest(s).
  • When it comes to the meal, make the conscious decision to avoid overeating and to make your calories count. Turkey is a very good source of lean protein. Vegetables contain plenty of fiber and water. Between these, you can eat a delicious and healthy meal which will also leave you feeling satisfied.
  • Avoid alcohol, which contains empty calories and may possibly impair your judgment when it comes to choosing the right foods in your weight loss plan. Instead, drink water or other sugar-free beverages.
  • Weather permitting, take some time to go for a walk after your meal. Encourage others to join you and it will seem less like exercising and more like socializing.

Following these suggestions will help you enjoy your Thanksgiving and feel better the next day...and the days following. Before you know it, the December holidays and New Year's will be here, but you'll be prepared.

Happy Thanksgiving from FIT Medical Weight Loss!
