Never underestimate the value of a good night’s sleep. It can do more than just improve the look of your skin and improve your mental concentration. Ensuring you have healthy sleep patterns can also aid your diet and help you lose weight. To look your best, you need to eat well and exercise regularly. Perhaps this sounds familiar? You are often so busy making what seems to be the right choices for your body, that you end up sacrificing the quality of your sleep.

Failure to get at least seven hours of sleep can interfere with your body and mind. When you are tired, you are less likely to make an effort and grab that coffee and accompanying sweet treat to help pep you up. In fact, from a scientific perspective, a lack of sleep can increase your need for unhealthy food while decreasing your metabolism. This is not a great combination for those focused on weight loss.

An odd late night here and there won’t make much difference. But, if sleep deprivation is prolonged, then your body can become more insulin resistant, circulating and storing fat incorrectly. Over the long-term, it can lead to serious health issues such as diabetes.

Lack of quality sleep can lead to you making bad food choices. You can convince yourself that one donut won’t ruin your diet and you will get back on track tomorrow. If you weren’t so tired, you would probably be able to resist the temptation and fight the urge to indulge. However, in a rush to say yes to that healthy sugar and carb-laden treat, your brain has gone into sugar overload and your reward centers are all lit up. This means that unfortunately one donut can lead to many more if not nipped in the bud very quickly!

In a study carried out by the University of Chicago, they determined that late night snacking also increases for those who sleep less than 8 hours a night. It stands to reason that if you are awake longer then you are probably going to consume more unnecessary calories.

Lack of sleep can also seriously impact the amount of time it takes your body to get over a workout at the gym – if you manage to get there in the first place, that is. When you are too tired to exercise, it is easy to say no because you aren&rsfquo;t really in the right frame of mind in the first place.

You may have heard of the adage, never shop when you are hungry. The same applies when you are overtired. You are more likely to throw easy to consume pre-prepared food with higher calorie content and carbohydrates into your cart over food to create a nice salad, as an example.

So if losing weight is high on your priority list, then make sure you get enough sleep each night. You will feel much better off and soon have people commenting on how well you look.
