Eating through boredom, or diversion eating, as it is often called, is an issue that many people face. You may find yourself at work wanting to eat a cookie or a chocolate bar because things are quiet. You may notice that you are hungry when you are home alone and want to pass the time with food or something sweet. The most important thing you can do to counterattack eating from boredom is to notice it when it occurs. When you know it is happening, then you can take steps to avoid the cupboard and the fridge.
Understand that eating will not solve the problem
Understanding that food will not solve the problem you are facing is important. It will only take one or two attempts at raiding the cupboard to realize that eating isn’t going to resolve the issue. Once you have finished eating, the situation will remain the same. You have to find some other way to ease the boredom. Eating is never a solution, unless you are hungry.

Do some exercise
One of the best things you can do for diversion eating is exercise. Exercise when you are bored. Exercise when you are tired. Exercise just because. Exercise can solve a lot of problems – most importantly, it will stop you from reaching for food and make you fit and healthy in the process. There are so many fun options when it comes to exercise. Even a simple walk can bring many benefits.
Get out of the house
We all need a change of scenery from time to time. If you don’t want to be at home, then get out. You don’t have to go far to make a change. Go somewhere where you won’t be enticed to eat. Do a spot of window shopping. Walk the dog. Go to the park. Head to the mall. Wherever you go, enjoy the break from your usual surroundings and realize that only you can make a difference in your eating habits.
Visit a friend
Friends can make everything seem bearable. So when you are struggling with eating from boredom, visit a friend. Chatting with a friend for half an hour can make anyone feel better. If you cannot visit them in person, then why not connect with them online. It will make you forget about the fact you wanted to eat and put a smile on your face at the same time.
Do something with your hands
Doing even the tiniest thing with your hands such as playing a game on your cell phone, texting a friend, or doing a crossword puzzle can help you add perspective. Often by doing something with your hands and fingers, you are sending a message to your brain that all is A-OK and you don’t need food to while away the time.
