Travel is exciting; there is no doubt about it! Whether you are exploring local destinations or heading further afield, travel can broaden your horizons, help you relax and be a great learning experience. But, if you are dieting while you are traveling, it can be a greater challenge to stick to your diet. This is a common issue we hear from our clients at FIT Medical Weight Loss, but we have some great tips to help you solve this problem. While you may not be able to stick 100% to your diet goals depending on where you are traveling, you can ensure that you don’t come back from your holiday weighing more than when you left.
Watch what you drink
Whether you are hanging out at the beach or staying in a hotel, you will need to quench your thirst at some point. One of the best things you can do is to watch what you drink. While an exotic juice, mocktail or cocktail may sound refreshing, it can also be super high in sugar and calories. Stick to sparkling mineral water with lemon for a refreshing drink or opt for diet soft drink if you wish to down something sweeter.

Eat grilled food
The summer holiday season is also barbecue season, which means that there may be plenty of grilled vegetables and meat on the menu. Grilled food is always an excellent choice as it is a low carb option. Grilled food locks in the natural flavors which means that you don’t need to add any high-calorie sauces or additives to make it taste great. Partner with colorful dressing-free and cream-free salads to keep to your diet goals.
Prepare food yourself
If you have accommodation with a kitchen or kitchenette, even better. Being able to prepare and cook food yourself means that you know every ingredient and spoonful of sugar that enters your body. It also allows you to stick as closely to your diet as you can, just as you would at home. It also reduces the temptation to stray from the healthiest of choices and stops you from saying yes to the dessert, even though you know it is a no-no.
Plan for travel periods
If you know you’re going to be splitting your travel time between planes, trains or busses, then plan for it. Have super healthy snacks at the ready, so you aren’t stuck searching for healthy food options at locations where junk food and snack food are the norm. Be organized and stick as close to your regular eating patterns where possible. If you usually have a mid-afternoon snack at 3 pm to tide you over until dinner, and you know you will be travelling around this time, then have one prepared and stored in your backpack or handbag.
Don’t skip meals
Skipping meals in order to treat yourself later in the day is one of the worst things you can do. You may think you can go for a particular length of time without food, but that reality may be different. You may become light-headed and reach for the first thing you see, or you may be ravenous come the next meal and overindulge without even thinking because you need food so badly. Eating regularly is better for your body – always.
