It's very easy to get out of your workout routine during the holidays, especially when you are busy with family and festivities. When things finally settle down again you may find you have lost your motivation to get back into your regular exercise routine. Although it helps to remember that healthy weight loss depends on both diet and exercise, you sometimes need a little extra inspiration to get back on track.
The promise of losing weight and feeling better about yourself may be enough to inspire some people, but even the most motivated of us occasionally fall into slumps. These are some ideas to help motivate you to exercise again, either after the holidays or any time you feel less-than-inspired to workout.

Just get moving
Do something small, right now. Jog in place or do a set of 10 pushups. Get your heart rate up enough to remember how good it feels to exercise.
Set realistic goals for yourself and reward yourself when you achieve them
Determine a realistic goal for yourself, such as committing to workouts for a certain amount of time for a certain number of days. Perhaps you are working towards a specific weight loss goal per week. When you achieve your goal, go ahead and treat yourself to something special like a spa treatment or a new pair of shoes.
Mix up your usual workout routine
Can't get motivated to power walk outside during the cold winter months? Perhaps you can find an indoor track to walk on instead. Are weight-bearing exercises sounding a little boring? Maybe you can mix it up by attending a yoga session instead.
Find a workout buddy or buddies
Find inspiration in others who also want to exercise and/or lose weight. It helps when you have someone who holds you accountable or even just keeps you company while you're working out. If you are unable to exercise with real life friends due to things such as schedule conflicts, then you can easily find online resources and virtual buddies who can help you stay motivated.
Focus on your "why"
Sometimes, all you need to do is tap into the reasons why you wanted to lose weight in the first place to reignite your motivation. An upcoming class reunion or wedding? Being healthy and fit for your children? Looking great and feeling better? Whatever your "why," remember it when you feel like skipping your workout.
Here's hoping you rediscover your workout motivation and have a healthy start to 2014!
