Many of the clients that come to see us for weight loss issues want to get rid of their belly fat, in particular. It is a real concern for them and, as you age, the ability to lose the dreaded donut around the waist can be even more difficult. If you want to reclaim your waist and say goodbye to belly fat forever, then you have to approach the issue from many different angles. Weight loss alone is not enough to remove the visceral fat around the belly; but with a multi-pronged approach, it can be done.
Alter your diet
The first thing which needs to change is your diet. If you want to lose a few pounds and get rid of the flabby tummy, then altering what you eat is a great place to start. The other thing which you need to look at is the size of your portions, as well as the size of your plate. Reducing both can radically bring about weight loss and a reduction in inches on the belly. Aim for a low carb diet where possible, fill up on fresh vegetables, limit junk food and try to control the urge to snack late at night.

Get moving
In order to lose the belly fat, you will have to incorporate an exercise plan into your diet. Unfortunately, dieting alone may not be enough to remove your belly fat. If you are unsure what works for you, then our experts will be only too happy to discuss your exercise options when you pop in for your regular weigh in. Look at incorporating some aerobic exercise into your daily schedule such as walking, cycling or swimming to get your body moving.
Use target exercises
While it is difficult to lose fat in just one area, you can incorporate some target exercises into your day to help tone up the belly and waist area. Consider adding sit-ups, vertical leg crunches, and planks into the mix. Yoga is also an excellent way to tone up that middle area. Start with poses such as the Extended Boat pose, the Warrior 3 pose, and the Tree pose to really get those abdominals working overtime.
Drink more
Increase your water intake to burn the stored fat in your body and reduce your middle. While low-fat carbonated drinks are better than full-fat sodas, limiting them can reduce bloating and water retention. Aim to drink at least one liter of natural water a day to help you feel full and alert. If you exercise daily, then you will need to drink more to help you stay hydrated. The actual amount will depend upon your weight, age, and exercise program.
Reduce stress
Stress can actually be a huge inhibitor of weight loss and can add to your weight gain around the middle due to your body's increased levels of cortisol. If you want to shed belly fat, look for ways to reduce the overall stress in your life. Stress will have you reaching for fatty food before you know it, and will stimulate your appetite so you can't stop thinking about food.
Improve your sleep quality
At FIT Medical Weight Loss, we put a lot of emphasis on getting quality sleep regularly. Try to stick to your routines even on the weekends, so that your metabolism will keep you looking slim and trim. Aim for at least 6-8 hours of quality sleep every night. Establish your patterns and then stick to them. If you find that you cannot get to sleep easily, then limit your caffeine consumption and use of electronic devices before bedtime so you are relaxed and calm.
