Here are the findings of this study:

  1. The real-world study demonstrated that semaglutide, an FDA-approved anti-obesity medication, is effective for weight loss in patients with overweight and obesity, both with and without type 2 diabetes (T2DM), over a one-year period.

  2. The study included 305 patients who were prescribed weekly subcutaneous injections of semaglutide, with most patients receiving the higher dose of 2.4mg. The mean total body weight loss percentage (TBWL%) at one year was 13.4% for the entire cohort, with patients without T2DM achieving a higher TBWL% of 16.7% compared to those with T2DM at 10.1%.

  3. A significant proportion of patients experienced substantial weight loss, with 82% losing more than 5% of their body weight, 65% losing more than 10%, 41% losing more than 15%, and 21% losing more than 20% at one year. Semaglutide treatment also resulted in improvements in metabolic parameters, including reductions in blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.

  4. Although side effects were reported by half of the patients, the majority were mild and did not significantly impact the patients' quality of life. Nausea and diarrhea were the most commonly reported side effects, and in some cases, side effects led to discontinuation of the medication.
