"I'd love to exercise more... I'm just too busy!" I'm sure you've heard that said once or twice before. Maybe you've even said it yourself. The average person works over 38 hours a week - and medical experts recommend that we spend at least 56 hours a week sleeping. That leaves about 74 hours per week (or 7 hours per day) for eating, spending time with family, commuting to and from work, and running errands. Where's the time to exercise? Thankfully, one of the most effective ways to exercise is also the easiest. All you have to do is throw on a pair of shoes and start walking!

An average person, walking a normal pace, burns about 150 calories walking 1.5 miles in half an hour. People that spend just 3 hours a week walking will lose an extra 900 calories every single week! On top of calorie loss, walking has other benefits as well. These benefits include improved blood circulation, strengthening of your muscles, and a better night's sleep. Studies have shown that people who walk regularly are less likely to develop memory loss. Other studies have proven that walking can be as effective as antidepressant medication for some people as well.

So, where to start? An easy place to begin is 30-45 minutes of walking at the beginning or end of the day. A quick walk at lunchtime is a good idea as well. Another simple way to add steps is to park further away from your destination in parking lots, and always taking the stairs rather then elevators and escalators. Walking is great for the whole family (including any canine companion that you may have), so make your walks more enjoyable by bringing a companion along with you!
