When you lose weight your dress size will ultimately change. And, if your weight loss goals are ambitious, then you will find that you go through a number of sizes before you reach your goal weight. This can play havoc on your wardrobe and your budget. Having to source entire wardrobes for work and leisure can be an expensive exercise. Here are some tips to add some variety to your wardrobe without necessarily costing a fortune.

Plan a Capsule Wardrobe

While you are working toward your weight loss goal, rather than feeling you have to go out and purchase a whole new wardrobe, planning a capsule wardrobe can be easier on the pocket. Decide on a few pieces which can be mixed and matched to create a number of looks. It is a minimalist approach to fashion where belts and accessories play a big part. Stick to one color palate so you have many combinations and options to wear. This will help you save money which you can spend once you realize your goal weight.

Online Garage Sales

Garage sales are an interesting place to pick up a few bargains. However, thanks to social media, online garage sales are now possible; and the best thing is, you can view the item before you even leave the house! Have a search for “online garage sales” in your area on Facebook.com and see what comes up. It is a great way to shop – after all someone’s trash is another person’s treasure.

Online Classifieds

There are a number of sites available online although you may need quite a bit of time to sort through the options. Freecycle.com is a website where individuals give away their clothing and other items that they no longer need free of charge. Craigslist.com offers online classified advertisements for clothing in your local area. eBay.com is another website which can be sorted locally. Searching this way allows you to see if anyone is selling items close to your home ultimately saving you the price of postage. It pays to check these kinds of websites regularly to see what is available.

Clothing Exchange

Clothing exchanges are becoming quite popular and enable you to swap clothing you no longer need. You can search for clothing swaps in your area on Rehashclothes.com or even host your own. Depending on how many guests, you may need to source an area bigger than your living room. You may also want to set rules for what can and can’t be swapped. Obviously the more people in attendance, the more variety of clothing will be on offer.

Second-hand Stores

Vintage stores, thrift shops, second-hand stores – whatever you want to call them – can be a huge source of inspiration for shopping. While they may be cheaper, if you don’t want to outlay a lot of money, have your capsule wardrobe in mind when you shop. A lot of “as new” condition clothing is donated to second-hand stores, so you may be pleasantly surprised by your finds. Consignment stores are also very popular and will pay you money for your unwanted goods. You can then put the money to good use with more fitting purchases.

Rent Clothing

You might be surprised to learn you can rent clothing. Websites such as Gwynniebee.com and Letote.com make it relatively easy. They charge a regular monthly fee for a specific number of items. As an example, Le Tote charges $39 a month for 2 clothing items and one accessory, or $59 a month for 3 clothing items and 2 accessories. When you want to mix it up, just send them back and they will send you more clothing options. You get unlimited exchanges per month and if you love an item in particular, you are able to purchase it at a discounted price. Gwynnie Bee allows you to swap any number of items at a time without the need to do a full ‘tote’ exchange. Both offer free shipping and free laundry.

Buy from outlet stores

Outlet stores such as T.J.Maxx and Burlington Coat Factory, or any discount store for that matter, can be very helpful during the weight loss transition period. Their regular clothing prices are often very cheap and they regularly have a bargain or sale rack situated instore. This means that you can pick up a new pair of pants or a skirt for $10, or a whole outfit for $20. Once the clothing no longer fits, you can donate the clothes to goodwill for a tax deduction and purchase more in a smaller size. Consider these clothes part of your transition wardrobe. They may be inexpensive, but with the right accessories, you can make them look as stylish as necessary. Note that tops will last longer than fitted pants or skirts, although purchases with elastic waists, will enable you to wear an article through more than one dress size.
