There is a common misconception that people in general – and women in particular - cannot lose weight once we hit a “certain age.” So many of us simply accept the belief that it’s impossible to win the ongoing battle against our slower metabolisms once we hit forty-something. As a result, we often simply surrender without even trying to lose weight. In all truth, losing weight does become more difficult as we get older. However, it’s not impossible to shed those excess pounds, and you don’t have to resort to painful weight loss surgery in order to do so. As long as you’re willing to work a little harder, you’ll continue looking and feeling great well into your forties and beyond. Read on to learn more about the steps you can take to naturally boost your slower metabolism and lose weight after forty.

In a recent article on their website, the Get Healthy U team shared the following six steps for losing weight and feeling great after turning forty:
1. Check with your physician or other medical professional to rule out any underlying metabolic conditions, such as hypothyroidism, which may be affecting your ability to lose weight.
2. Incorporate strength training into your regular workout routine at least twice a week. Having more muscle increases your metabolism and helps your body burn fat more efficiently.
“Strength training for as little as 20 minutes two to three times a week can build enough muscle to increase your resting metabolic rate (RMR) over time.”
3. Try HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts. This type of exercise helps elevate your heart rate quickly with short recovery periods in between, so you’re working harder, but for a shorter amount of time. Studies show HIIT burns more fat than other workout routines.
4. Give up the processed junk food! Instead, look into getting the nourishment your body needs from healthy recipes made from clean, whole ingredients and lean sources of protein.
5. Detoxify your body naturally by drinking water. Drinking plenty of water also helps with weight loss by suppressing your appetite enough so you can avoid overeating at meal and/or snack times.
6. Make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep. Studies show that poor sleep is linked to feeling overly hungry and overeating which leads to weight gain.
