When you are losing weight, you naturally want to make the most of your current wardrobe before putting your hand in your pocket to buy more. However, if you are planning on dropping more than one dress size, then you may need a transition wardrobe to see you through. No one wants to spend a huge wad of cash, only to realize that in two months none of it fits, and they are back to square one. Aside from borrowing from your besties (which is a fabulous idea by the way!), here are some cost saving tips that you can apply to your wardrobe, so you feel great, look fantastic and save your hard-earned dollars to boost your wardrobe when you finally reach your goal weight.
Wear what works today
Firstly, you are not a mind reader, so stop trying to predict the future. There is no need to worry about the state of your wardrobe or your body in six months’ time – focus on today first and foremost. Examine your wardrobe and work out what looks great TODAY and wear it with pride. You want to wear something which will flatter your size and give you the motivation to continue with your weight loss program.

Sort out the basics
While there are some tops, sweaters, and dresses which can accommodate a changing body more than others, make sure you have your basics figured out. Keep an eye out for well-fitting jeans, trousers and skirts to get you through, and do lots of mixing and matching. During the transition stage, there is no need to have any more than two of each of the basics - focus on your wardrobe staples and work from there to help save money.
Accessorise it up
Accessories are one of the best ways to absolutely make the most of your wardrobe. A pair of black trousers and a simple black top can be dressed up so many ways, thanks to neat scarves and necklaces. Even an interesting belt can alter a look! Sometimes the simplest of things can have a considerable effect on the way an outfit comes together. Aim for pretty prints to help redirect the eye for a more flattering look.
Add detail with shoes
One of the most important pieces of advice is to make sure your shoes fit comfortably. You may discover that your feet change size as you lose weight, so make that a priority and purchase a new pair to suit. Walking around in shoes which are too big or too small can cause aches and blisters. There are some beautiful shoes out there, so set yourself up with comfortable footwear that will enhance your current wardrobe. Again, try not to focus too far in the future!
Clean out your closet
Do you have clothes that have been in your wardrobe for as long as you can remember? Well, weight loss time is a great time to go through your wardrobe and get rid of the outfits which no longer serve you in a positive way. If it’s too big, then get rid of it. If you don’t wear it because of the way it fits, toss it out. If you have only worn it once in the last five years, then get rid of that too. There is no point in keeping things in your cupboard that don’t make you feel fantastic every day.
Opt for stretch fabrics
There are some brands which are one size fits most and can accommodate multiple sizes. If you find something which works, then buy it! You may notice it costs a little more than usual, but if you consider that it is going to last the long haul, then it may pay to invest. Look out for fabrics such as modal, bamboo, jersey or stretch cotton. Tunics and tube skirts can be very forgiving as can wrap dressing and leggings.
Buy second-hand clothing
There is nothing wrong with buying pre-loved or second-hand clothing. In fact, they have many wonderful bargains that it may wish you had started shopping that way much earlier. You can buy a whole new outfit at the second-hand store for the price of one item in a regular store. This will help you through the changeable sizes and ease the concern about spending unnecessarily. Take a friend and make a day of it – you can have a lot of fun.
